The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Office of Citizens for a Healthy Bay (CHB).  The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization achieving its mission and financial objectives.

Candidates should have a four-year degree and at least five years experience in nonprofit work, including substantial grant writing.  Strong oral and written communication skills; and a passion for CHB’s mission of “engaging citizens in the clean up, restoration, and protection of Commencement Bay, surrounding waters, and habitat” are also essential.

        The position is full time and salary is, depending on experience, $62,000 plus with benefits.  Application review begins August 1, 2008 and will remain open until the position is filled.  CHB is an equal opportunity employer.

 

In program development and administration, the Executive Director will:

  • Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy that achieves its mission and remains financially sound.

  • Provide leadership in developing policy, program, and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board.

  • Plan, implement, see to completion, and evaluate programs, grants, events, and activities.

  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in the work of the organization.

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and security of the CHB boat and office.

  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the cleanup restoration and protection of Commencement Bay and surrounding waters.

  • Demonstrate proficiency with Word, Excel, Access Power Point, and Outlook computer programs.

 

In communications and public relations, the Executive Director will:

  • Provide leadership, effective public relations, advocacy, and information to increase the visibility of the organization.

  • Establish effective working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.

  • Represent CHB’s mission and programs to agencies, funding sources, the general public, and the media.

  • Oversee the organization’s electronic communications, print publications, and website.

 

In management of staff and in relations to the Board, the Executive Director will:

  • Be responsible in consultation with the Personnel Committee for the recruitment, hiring, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.

  • Develop job descriptions, regularly evaluate each staff member, and use sound human resource practices.

  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff to relate specialized work to the total program and mission of the organization.

  • Attract, motivate, and retain a high quality and diverse staff.

  • Keep the Board informed on a regular basis about all aspects of the organization.

  • Maintain a good working relationship with the President of the Board.

 

In budget, finance, and fundraising, the Executive Director will:

  • Develop and maintain sound financial practices.

  • Prepare a budget in consultation with the finance committee and the Board.

  • Monitor finances monthly and report to the Board at its regular meetings.

  • Develop and implement a fundraising plan including membership donations in conjunction with the Board so that programs are financially viable.

  • Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its mission

  • Search for, write, and follow-up on grants in consultation with staff and report to the Board at its regular meetings.

  • Conduct the official correspondence of the organization and execute all legal documents.
