Welcome to the Stand for Our Sound Awards nomination form. Communities For a Healthy Bay proudly celebrates those who have passionately devoted their efforts towards the well-being of our community and Bay. We invite nominations of outstanding candidates from all corners of the South Sound and from diverse industry sectors – be it from schools, government, nonprofits, technology, academia, or research.

We’re seeking individuals, groups, or businesses that excel in:

  • Advocacy relating to Commencement Bay and the Puget Sound region through avenues like community organizing, outreach, research, or public policy.
  • Dedication to the betterment and representation of underserved communities.
  • Leadership in local environmental policies.

Nomination Deadline: Ensure your nominations are submitted by September 30, 2023. Please note that nominations received post-midnight on Sunday, October 1, 2023, will not be considered.

Selection Process: A distinguished committee composed of Communities for a Healthy Bay staff, our board of directors, past award winners, and dedicated community members will review all nominations. Winners will be informed via email and are encouraged to grace the award reception in person on November 9, 2023.

To make your nomination stand out, we recommend detailed responses that showcase unique aspects of the nominee’s efforts, especially those that might not be widely known or available online.


Award Categories:

  • Environmental Justice Service Award: Recognizing transformative contributors in environmental justice, those who advocate, educate, and foster collaborations for the betterment of vulnerable communities.
  • Rising Tide Award: Saluting the young minds of Tacoma that personify hope, commitment, and respect for the environment and our natural resources.
  • Healthy Bay Champion Award: Celebrating the pillars of our community, whose persistent efforts have conserved and rejuvenated Commencement Bay and its adjacent waterways.
  • Clean Water Hero in Elected Office Award: Honoring elected leaders whose decisions safeguard our waters, promote equity, and champion environmental justice. (Do not nominate anyone actively running for office)
  • Kay Treakle Lifetime Achievement Award: A tribute to those whose spirit and journey resonate with the strength, passion, and advocacy of Kay Treakle. Kay was a courageous and savvy activist who fought institutional powers profiting from harming the environment and people in ways that showed her love, humor, intelligence, and courage. Kay was a mighty force for people and nature. She left this world before she was done with her work and through this award, we honor her and keep her memory alive.
